Before the adventure gets going.....

Well here I am at the hardest part of our adventure....waking and getting ready at three in the morning, a drive to Sacramento( thank goodness not SF this time and long flights.  I took a muscle relaxer since I couldn't find my sleeping pills.  I thought that would loosen me to wet noodle stage and I'd sleep to Chicago.  No such luck!  I'm wide awake and experiencing restless leg... a real pain when you are relegated to coach seats with no good leg room or ways to move.  Thank goodness I'm on an aisle and able to stick one leg out and stretch now and then.

After tearing my calf muscle and having to wear a boot and wraps for the days before the flight, the doc says I have to exercise in my seat, and drink lots of liquids.  He says to get up and walk periodically, with all the drinking, at least I'll have a destination.  I think the compression socks I'm wearing seem to help... will find out for sure when I've been in the air for the fourteen hours or so.  I don't know how long we are in Chicago... mostly just time to get to out next flight to Frankfort.  On the way home it's a direct flight from Germany's to California.  If only I could sleep.

Well I'll keep trying!

Kathy came down to Sacramento this morning with us and will take the van home.  I felt sorry having her come  so early, especially on a day she has to teach.  We were able to get in the airport and process with no problem and had breakfast before take off.

Sept 30th  .....Travel Day

After three airplane rides (Sac to Chicago, Chicago to Frankfort and Frankfort to Hamburg) we're all pretty fed up with riding in the airplanes!  We were super lucky on the long ride as every seat in the plane was full except the one between Michael and me!  That just never happens!

Hamburg, Germany is lovely and it has the amazing miniature railroad museum. You can google it to see it move. The videos I took don't work on this blog.

Berlin, Germany once split into two was great. We have been in several places in the old Western Germany, but this gave us a look at the Eastern Influence. There was so much to learn and see. Pretty amazing!

Wittenburg, Germany is the Rome to all Protestants. Luther just wanted to debate with the priests when he gave them the 95 Theses in 1517, but they tattled to the Pope, the Pope over-reacted and voila, Protestants!

Torgau, Germany has great historical value with the Russians meeting with the Americans to defeat Germany.

Meissen, Germany is the home of Meissen pottery, but moreover a fairy-tale city with churches and castles that seem out of children' books.

Dresden, Germany is the city that was completely destroyed by the British and Americans during WW II. Known as the Phoenix City, it was completely restored by the rubble women and the entire inhabitants of Dresden, who were made communists by the Russians.

Bad Schandau, Germany is a Spa area that is truly beautiful, with many small picturesque villages a short ride to The Bastei, carved from the sandstone mountains by water, erosion and wind, over a million years ago. It has been on the tourist list for over 200 years.

Prague... Czech Republic includes several towns but of course Prague as it's jewel. We were so impressed with it the last time we were there, but this time we arrived on the weekend and couldn't even see Prague under the million tourists!

Krakow, Poland is a beautiful city... you just have to visit sometime. The thing that impressed me most was the resilience of the Polish people. Man, every body gave them the short stick yet they seem to be incredibly positive. This is where the Jews were rounded up and taken to death camps. Not only just the Jews went, but any Pole who defended them (and there were many), as well as any Gypsy was rounded up. Besides the tour of Auschwitz and Birkenau (deplorable), Poland has the Wielieczka Salt Mines (beautiful and quite amazing). Schindler's Factory Museum is pretty interesting too.. not your normal museum.

Auschwitz is the tour to the deplorable death camp.

Warsaw, Poland is Poland's answer to Dresden. Of course the Russians didn't really help them to rebuild like in Dresden. They promised the Poles they would help them defeat the Germans, then waited across the river until the Poles were pretty much extinguished. Horrible! Look up the Polish Resistances. See the movie again titled--”The Pianist”

From there it was Frankfort...to find that our plane was delayed three hours, missing our flight in S.F. (we were there, they just wouldn't open the door), a $400 rental of a car that would take the six of us home, and along with that a two hour ride that got us home around one o'clock.
